TeachingCity City Idea Lab

The City Idea Lab is a City of Oshawa TeachingCity project. It is dedicated to providing an open-concept learning and research space where university and college students work across disciplines with policy experts in the City of Oshawa to discuss community development, co-create solutions and regularly explore areas for advancement.

The City Idea Lab will focus on providing experiential learning and applied research opportunities for students beginning in September 2018. In the Lab, City staff will actively work with students and faculty to collaborate and generate ideas for solutions to issues identified in the City of Oshawa Diversity and Inclusion Plan. The City Idea Lab will provide many opportunities to all University of Ontario Institute of Technology faculty and students, as well as Durham College and Trent University Durham-GTA as it scales up operations.

City Idea Lab - Idea Jam

The City of Oshawa, in collaboration with the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, hosted the City Idea Lab - Idea Jam on June 6. This inaugural event was a brainstorming session focused on the implementation of the city's Diversity and Inclusion plan adopted by council in November 2017, and in particular the Strategic Action Area of Community Development. Participants included City of Oshawa staff as well as students, faculty and staff from the three participating institutions: University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Durham College and Trent University Durham GTA.

In the afternoon, participants critiqued and evaluated the ideas that arose from the Idea Jam morning session. Many of these ideas will move forward for implementation or serve as the foundation for a student research project.
