Why partner with the university?

There are many ways organizations, businesses and not-for-profit entities can work with groups at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in mutually beneficial partnerships. Through partnerships, we hope to extend the impact of our research and teaching, to have a greater impact on the social and economic health of our community.

Successful partnerships are based on shared vision, shared values and a plan built co-operatively by the partners to meet the needs and core values of all the partners. Potential outcomes of partnership with our university include:

Our university has a track record of establishing strong and effective partnerships with companies, government agencies, and community partners such as Ontario Power Generation, General Motors and Durham Regional Police Service. The university is consistently seeking opportunities to grow its existing relationships and develop new ones.

Advanced research and innovation projects

Collaborative research: Access to academic expertise through collaborative research and development programs utilizing our state-of-the-art facilities and personnel. These directed programs will address your more immediate research needs, and will support longer-term, exploratory research projects to create competitive market value for your company. Regardless of the type of project, we endeavour to maximize your investment in research through leveraging grants from provincial and federal programs. We partner with you to facilitate meaningful interactions and find the right individuals and research programs to support your business or organizational goals. 

Research chairs: Provide strategic alliances between our Canada Research Chairs and industry. These partnerships focus on both fundamental and applied research that directly impacts end users and turns innovative ideas into real solutions.

Technology transfer and commercialization: Opportunities to acquire proprietary technology from the university's intellectual property portfolio through licensing or through supporting startup companies. Contract negotiations are handled by licensing professionals employed by the university.

Working with or recruiting students and graduates 

Co-ops and internships for students: We can facilitate part-time work opportunities, internships, collaborative research opportunities for students, program placements and co-operative education work terms to provide mutually beneficial opportunities for employers and students.

High-quality research facilities

Research support: The university has many state-of-the-art facilities such as:

  • ACE: The first testing and research centre of its kind in Canada, and in many respects the world.
  • Clean Energy Research Laboratory (CERL): Used for research on hydrogen production, heat engines and nanotechnology.
  • Energy Systems and Nuclear Science Research Centre (ERC): A 9,290-square-metre facility that houses the university's unique-in-Canada education programs and leading-edge research in geothermal, hydraulic, hydrogen, natural gas, nuclear, solar and wind energy.
  • UOIT-CMCC Centre for Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation: Works with related health research and innovative supportive agencies, educational partners, health-care delivery institutions, industry and government to examine questions focused on the prevention and management of chronic musculoskeletal and psychological conditions and disabilities.

Professional development

Professional development: The university offers workshops and certificates to provide skills in management, leadership and communication. Organized and taught by professionals, these courses can be customized to meet the unique needs of your business or organization. 

Giving to the university

Your expert advice: The university seeks your expertise and industry knowledge to help ensure our educational programs are current and relevant. We invite your organization to provide a single point of contact who will keep the university informed of industry and equipment trends and standards.

Equipment and materials: We are happy to receive donations or sponsorship of the acquisition of equipment to ensure faculty and students always have access to the latest technology and innovation. This can be done as a philanthropic gift or leveraged through research programs.

Philanthropic donations: Your company may choose to donate funds toward student bursaries or scholarships that may be matched. Your industry support for capital campaigns will enhance the university's ability to remain at the forefront of providing technology-rich education. It is needed to ensure our students excel in today’s knowledge-driven economy, and world-leading fundamental and applied research.
