Biosafety

UOIT is responsible, under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, for establishing specific policies and procedures to maintain safe working conditions. There are additional requirements for working with biohazardous materials in the federal Human Pathogens and Toxins Act, the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) regulations and Canadian Food Inspection Agency requirements.

UOIT's Biosafety Committee establishes and maintains a system to ensure that all activities within the university involving biological agents are conducted in a safe manner and in conformity with generally accepted standards. The Biosafety Committee:

  • Reviews all applications for a Biosafety Certificate;
  • Assesses the risks of the work;
  • Sets the appropriate level of containment; and
  • Specifies any additional precautions to be taken, including appropriate waste disposal.
