Research at UOIT

About Research

A scientist working with bones.

Teaching and research have long been considered the two pillars of the university endeavour. UOIT is equally committed to research intensiveness and excellence in teaching when it opened in 2003, forging a reputation as one of Canada's newest research-intensive institutions. This is uncommon as most higher education institutions start with a focus primarily on undergraduate teaching, followed by research years later.

In 2003-04, UOIT had $250,000 of research funding, which increased to more than $1.2 million the following year with a small faculty complement of only 24. In 2010-2011 alone, university researchers secured more than $9.5 million in external funding.

Every research project at UOIT is built on three guiding principles: excellence, innovation, and societal impact through the enhancement of the lives of Canadians and local and national economies. Designed to meet the needs of employers in the surrounding area and throughout Ontario, UOIT research focuses on the following fields:

  • Community and Social Wellness
  • Sustainable Energy
  • Applied Bioscience
  • Automotive, Materials and Manufacturing
  • Information and Communication
Building research intensiveness and graduate studies is one of the 5 themes identified in the university's 2008-2011 Strategic Plan.  Among the most significant initiatives are the $28 million federal and provincial government investment in the Automotive Centre of Excellence, the $48.5 million investment in a new Energy Systems and Nuclear Science Research Centre and the development plan to obtain more research chairs. To date UOIT has two Tier 1 Canada Research Chairs (CRC) in Aquatic Toxicology and Advanced Energy Systems, as well as three Tier 2 CRC's in: Health Informatics, Decomposition Chemistry and Robotics and Automation. An additional Tier 1 chair has been allocated to UOIT.
